@Blake,

You really should read your own rhetoric, before flaming others...

"By all accounts, Java is still more popular than either PHP and .Net" Really? ...and which source are YOU going to quote for that claim as "fact"? LOL!!!

Sorry Matt, but you're repeating the same kind of rhetoric that most proponents of one side or the other tends to do.

<i>Everyone seems to get to a point where they "go dotnet"</i>

Really? Everyone?

By all accounts, Java is still more popular than either PHP and .Net. Are all the big Java installs "going dotnet"?

I'd quote the rest of your comments, but none of it is substantiated. Do you have links to MySpace's technical set up that you can share? All those stats you list off are very impressive, but where did you get them? Facebook manages the same thing on PHP, and <a href="http://profy.com/2008/11/17/facebook-already-larger-than-myspace-in-the-us-according-to-google-trends-2/" rel="nofollow">by some recent accounts</a> is getting similar if not higher traffic levels. Do you have any hardware comparisons between what MySpace uses and what Facebook uses? Or cost-comparisons?

As to your claim about them getting tired of buying warehouses full of servers and "it'll probably happen" that they go to .Net, I'd love to see some substantiation on that. Do you have some inside information, or are you just hoping?

Without some facts or references to back up your comment, I'm afraid it's just more unsubstantiated sand-kicking. I would love to see whatever you've got if you've actually got some official numbers though.

Great idea. Surely the real-world examples speak volumes about which is really king though. Everyone seems to get to a point where they "go dotnet" - MySpace have moved to it and, by their own statements, reduced hardware by 20%. Ebay have now come onboard, Dell, Monster, Match.com, PageFlakes, PlentyOfFish.com (an amazing story/achievement by Markus Frind) and now there is talk of the mighty Amazon moving parts over too. Then there is the whole bunch of those who use .net but then rewrite their urls to cover their move to the dark-side.

MySpace.com is now processing 1.5 Billion page views per day
MySpace.com handles 2.3 million concurrent users during the day
MySpace.com’s average server CPU utilization went from 85% to 27% after moving (from another technology) to ASP.NET 2.0

I would also like to guess that, when FaceBook get tired of buying entire warehouses full of servers, they will also move to .NET - to stay true to open source devs I am sure they will use a go-between layer like MySpace have in parts, but it'll probably happen.
